QUESTION: How do I use the PC Suite?

ANSWER: This question seems to come up a lot, so here is a updated quick How To:

First thing to know: the PC Suite software works with BLUETOOTH only. You can NOT use the USB cable to connect to the PC Suite software. The USB is for use with the Audio Manager software and to create the N-Gage as an External Drive ONLY. Check the support section of this web site for details about the Audio Manager.

STILL HAVING PROBLEMS?
If you are still having problems, try following these Instructions:

Again: the PC Suite software works with BLUETOOTH only. You can not use the USB cable to connect to the PC Suite software.

In order to use the PC Suite you need three important things:

* The PC Suite Software installed
* An N-Gage Game Deck (paired with your PC)
* A BlueTooth Card/Connection on your PC (paired with your N-Gage). NOTE: Bluetooth software must support the Serial Port Profile (SPP).

We are assuming that you've already set up your BlueTooth Card on your PC and it supports the SPP. And, you've installed the PC Suite Software. Now you need to first make sure that your N-Gage and your PC are paired together (have a connection to each other).

[1] From your N-Gage Game Deck, go to Menu > Tools > Bluetooth and make sure that your N-Gage has all its settings set so that your Bluetooth is On, and visible to all bluetooth devices.

[2] You then will be adjusting your bluetooth settings on your PC. To do this, open up the "My Bluetooth Places" that was installed with your Bluetooth. You'll find a wizard in that folder that will help you create a name for your PC (fourth selection in the wizard menu). Once you have a name set for your PC, run the Wizard again and select the Second selection (Find a Specific Bluetooth device...). This process will pair your N-Gage with your PC. On the pairing screen, it will ask you to enter a Pin code. Select something that is easy to remember, then hit the "initiate Pairing" button to the right of the Pin Code box. This will prompt a message to appear on your N-Gage, asking you to enter the "Pin Code". Enter the same code you selecting on your PC. Once you submit the correct Pin Code, return to your PC and the Wizard program will be asking you to select what type of service you want to install. Select "Bluetooth Serial Port" and press "Finish". You will now have a new Serial Port Icon added to your "My Bluetooth Places" folder. Don't click this yet, but keep in mind, this will be the icon that will connect your PC with your Bluetooth.

[3] Now you need to make sure that your Com Ports are set correctly. To check/set this, first right click on the Bluetooth icon in your Task bar. Select Advanced Configuration. Under the Local Services tab, take note of what Com port is associated with the Bluetooth Serial Port - a safe one to have set there is Com Port 8. Now, right click on the MRouter Icon in your Task Bar (this is the icon that looks like two arrows). If you don't see this Icon, you can open it by going to C:\Program Files\Nokia\PC Suite for Nokia N-Gage\ and double click on the EXE file called "ConnMngmntBox.exe". Once you see the MRouter Icon in your Task Bar, right click on the icon and select "Properties". Now make sure that you have a check in the Com port that is the same port as the Local Services port.

[4] Now launch the PC Suite. Since this is your first time running the PC Suite, it will pop-up a message saying that this is your first time and you need to make a connection with your N-Gage. Under "My Bluetooth Places", double click on the Bluetooth Serial Port connection Icon you added before that linked to your N-Gage. Once connected, go back to the PC Suite and click "OK". You'll know if you are connected if the MRouter Icon in your Task Bar has changed from Grey color to a Green color. If the Mrouter is connected, the PC Suite will open and allow you to select the various options available to you.

[still problems?] If you are still having problems, there is one more thing you can check. Right click on your Bluetooth icon in your Task bar and select Advanced Configuration. Under the Client Applications tab, take note of what Com port tab is associated with the Bluetooth Serial Port (a safe one to have set there is Com Port 12). Now, see if you have a Connection Manager icon in your task bar and right click (this is the icon that shows a tiny cell phone with a green dot to the left of it). Once you open the connection Manager, make sure that the Yellow Port icon is highlighted then select "Advanced". Once the advanced window opens, make sure that the listed Com port is the same as the one listed under the Client Applications tab. If they are not, set this port to match the Client Applications Com Port.

If none of these have helped, you might want to make sure that your Bluetooth software/connector is hooked up correctly and that the Bluetooth Radio is ON and broadcasting. Consult your Bluetooth Connector manual or Manufacturer web site for more details.

QUESTION: My PC can't see my memory card when I connect the USB cable, but it works in the N-Gage?

Answer: It has been report that this problem occurs when you format the card using your PC, rather than your N-Gage. So as a rule of thumb always format the memory cards with you N-Gage only.

A possible solution is to format the card in a card reader connected to the computer, and formatting the card using the FAT 16 file system should work. This should remove any residual corrupted files, then you can format it again in the N-gage in order to get the correct file structure.

Alternatively other people have reported you can fix the problem by formatting the card in another electronic device such as a digital camera or PDA.

QUESTION: My memory card says it is corrupt, what can I do?

Answer: Firstly your memory card my not be corrupt. This is just the default error message the N-Gage reports if it can't access the memory card.

As the N-Gage runs on a battery, the N-Gage may not have enough power to read/write to the memory card. So the initial check is to make sure the N-Gage you are using is fully charged.

Another common fault is the card can not be accessed because too many programs are running already. This is mainly due to the fact that turning the N-Gage on and off does not close all the programs. To view what programs are running press and hold the menu button, then press the C button to shut down all programs except the 'Telephone'. And restart your N-Gage.

You may be able to fix the card by reformatting the card in the N-gage. However you should never format the card with anything other than the N-Gage hardware, unless you have a card reader. Don't even think about formatting the card with a PC via a USB cable connected to the N-gage, as the default PC setting is FAT 32, which is incompatible and you'll get the above problem.

If you have a memory card bigger than 128 MB, which is greater than the N-Gage was original designed for, it has been reported that 256 MMC and above cards needs a certain level of voltage. And issues may occur when the power is almost exhausted on the unit, which can corrupt or confuse the MMC memory card.

If you've tried formatting the card in the N-gage, then a possible alternative solution is to format the card in a card reader connected to the computer. Formatting the card using the FAT 16 file system should work. This should remove any residual corrupted files, then you can format it again in the N-gage in order to get the correct file structure. So we advise that if you going to get a larger card you should either have a card reader or find a friend who does.

Alternatively other people have reported you can fix the problem by formatting the card in another electronic device such as a digital camera or PDA.

QUESTION: How do I watch and get video and movies on my N-Gage?

Answer: This guide will teach you how to encode and watch full-length movies via the 3gpp media format for free. The RealOne Media Player that comes as default on your Nokia N-Gage will play this perfectly.

An average 90min movie encoded at the highest 15 fps in stereo is only about 50mb.
So stock up on MMC cards!!

Tools you need:

  • USB link provided with your Nokia N-Gage Multimedia Card (MMC) with enough space for movies
  • Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0 (FREE Download from Nokia’s website)
Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0

Nokia Multimedia converter 2.0 is a free application provided by Nokia for converting all the popular media types to play on your N-Gage. Nokia MC will convert .avi, .mpg, .mov, etc in minutes.

Click on the following link to download Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0

http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/0,,034-63,00.html

You will need to register with Nokia as they send you the serial number by email.

What you need to do:
  1. Download Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0 by clicking on the link above. Register with Nokia so that they send you the serial number. Install Nokia MC using the serial number received by email. Insert your Multimedia Card (MMC) with enough space to hold movies. We would recommend buying a 256 Meg Multimedia Card (MMC) as you’ll have enough space to hold up to 18 episodes of ‘Friends’. Use Nokia MC to convert your media file to 3gpp format. Remember to set the FPS to 15 when converting to 3gpp format for the highest resolution. If you're concerned about file size then, by all means go to a lower FPS. It took my P4 1.8ghz only about 10min to convert a 90min movie at max res. File transfer to your N-Gage is simple....
    • Make sure your MMC (Multimedia Card, which is different than a SD card) is installed. Connect your N-Gage to your PC via USB link Open Windows Explorer. Your computer should automatically recognize that your N-Gage with MMC Card installed is attached and it will show your device as an addition hard drive.
    • Drag/Copy your movie file to your memory card/device.
Now this is very important!! Disconnect your N-Gage from the USB link. (The game deck MUST be disconnected in order to access the MMC).
  2. Open RealOne Media Player, move to right tab to view contents of MMC, hit play, ENJOY!!!!
Converting DVD’s

Tools you need:
  • USB link provided with your Nokia N-Gage Multimedia Card (MMC) with enough space for movies Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0 (FREE Download from Nokia’s website) Smart Ripper
  • ImToo DVD Ripper
What you need to do:
  1. Use Smart Ripper to rip the .vob files from a DVD. Save the .vob files you have just ripped into a folder where you can find it. Use ImToo DVD Ripper, find the .vob files you created earlier. (This program converts .vob files into MPEG 1(VCD). Once the application has finished encoding the files use Nokia MC to convert the MPEG file into .3gpp. Insert your Multimedia Card (MMC) with enough space to hold movies. I would recommend buying a 256 Meg Multimedia Card (MMC) as you’ll have enough space to hold up to 18 episodes of ‘Friends’. Use Nokia MC to convert your media file to 3gpp format. • Drag/Copy your movie file to your memory card/device.
Now this is very important!! Disconnect your N-Gage from the USB link. (The game deck MUST be disconnected in order to access the MMC).

QUESTION: How do I remove/change the Original N-Gage Cover/Faceplate/Fascia?

Answer: Removing the cover is done at your own risk, and if you feel uncomfortable doing this operation we suggest you have some-one at your local Nokia Service Centre or mobile store do it instead.

Remove the back as if you where changing the MMC. Remove the battery. On the bottom of the N-Gage you will see six D shaped clips, holding on the front cover. Un-clip the second and second last clips, this will release the font cover.

To replace the front cover simply align the cover, push together and you should hear a snap sound.

QUESTION: How do I remove/change the N-Gage QD Cover/Faceplate/Fascia?

Answer: Removing the QD cover is slightly trickery than changing the original N-Gage cover. Doing so is done at your own risk. If you feel uncomfortable doing this operation we suggest you have some-one at your local Nokia Service Centre or mobile store do it instead.

Removing the N-Gage QD cover

The QD's cover is only held by the two clips you see behind the battery cover, on the top of the QD. Remove the battery and cover. Push on the two clips (away from the QD) a bit to disengage the top part of the cover. Now turn the QD over, keypad side up.

Then, holding only onto the rubber edge, push down on the four-way controller, you'll hear a small click and the left side will open up, then do the same thing on the right side, pushing down on the number pad in the area corresponding to the directional pad (2/3/5/6 area) until you hear the click.

Replacing the N-Gage QD cover

Looking at the front of the phone (keypad), pull the rubber flaps out of the way with your fingers for the power flap, and your thumbs for the card flap.

Line everything up, and push down. It should give you a few solid clicks as you press together the front and back around the edge. And then of course put your battery back in and replace the cover.

QUESTION: How do I set-up my Nokia N-Gage GPRS setting?

Answer: The first thing to check is has the GPRS function been turn on by your provider. Not sure, well phone them to check.

The easiest thing to do then is to have Nokia send the GPRS settings in a text message. You then open the message and click save setting and if you feel so inclined make them you default settings as well. Below is the link:

http://secure.mouse2mobile.com/clients/nokia/com/internet/1dis.asp

We have also been mailed by a number of customers, who have been having a problem connecting with Vodafone, and found the following setting worked for them:

Problem solved! Apparently you also have to "add internet apn" (something to do with names) to your account. They also removed my adult content baring just in case. Then use their "Internet settings" (shown below). Now I can connect to Arena using Vodafone and get my ass kicked in PTG!

Internet settings:

Connection name: Internet

Data bearer: GPRS

Access point name: internet (this must be in lower case)

User name: web (in lower case)

Prompt password: No

Password: web (in lower case)

Authentication: Normal

Gateway IP address: 0.0.0.0

No need to touch the advanced settings.

Thanks Zaid for sending that in ;)

What is Nokia N-Gage WSOD aka 'White Screen Of Death' and how do I avoid it?

Answer: WSOD is simply when your N-Gage’s internal memory gets so full it can no longer re-start itself. Leaving you with a white screen when you turn on the N-Gage and nothing else. The only solution is a trip to your local Nokia Support Center. You can avoid this by remembering these points:

  • Don’t let you internal memory drop below 500K, we recommend that you keep at least 1MB free.
  • When you’ve installed any application and from time to time look at the level of internal memory.
    (tools-manager-options-device memory.)
  • Remember that Logs, Contacts, Calendar, SMS, MMS and Email all go automatically into the internal memory.
  • Try to install SIS, MP3s, Applications and Games to a MMC card, rather than the internal memory.

If you follow these rules you should be OK, but do check your internal memory from time to time.

How can I reset the firmware of my N-Gage?

Answer: You simple input the following code *#7370# however this will wipe all you data on your phone including contact, messages, ringtones, etc.

How to find out the version of my N-Gage firmware?

Answer: Type the following code *#0000#

Can I increase the speed of my N-Gage?

Answer: If you stop the phone function of the Nokia N-Gage you can increase the speed of it. Simply press the power button and choose the Offline mode.

We hope these instructions/tips have been helpful.
